Quid Pro Quo, the Impeachment Process, and Trump. What's Next?

The investigations for impeachment against President Donald Trump began on September 24th. These investigations started because the president allegedly withheld military aid from Ukraine in order to investigate Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden. It was claimed that President Trump engaged in quid pro quo to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. President Trump called President Zelensky on July 25th. On the same day, two Ukrainian officials questioned the status of the $391 million in military aid. However, both President Trump and President Zelensky claim there was never any quid pro quo. In a separate phone call to Gordon Sondland, President Trump claimed, “that there was no quid pro quo, but President Zelensky must announce the opening of the investigations and he should want to do it”.

On December 13th, the House Judiciary Committee approved the two articles of impeachment making President Donald Trump the fourth president to face impeachment. Many, including the president, are claiming this impeachment process to be a “witch hunt”. Judiciary Committee member Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), told reporters that the committee's action was, "a travesty for America, and it's really tearing America apart". She added, "I have never in my entire life seen such an unfair, rigged railroad job against the President of the United States".

House Democrats are planning to hold the whole House vote on Wednesday, December 18th to vote on the two articles of impeachment. The next stage of the impeachment process in the Senate has President Trump optimistic. He has stated that he would like to see a long process and would like to have the whistleblower testify. The presidents of the United States and Ukraine have both publicly claimed that there was no quid pro quo. If the president is voted through the House to be investigated by the Senate, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) claims there is “zero chance [he] will be removed from office”.
