Mahmoud Believes in Democracy

It looks like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has written a letter directly to you and me, and all the rest of the American people. While I'm not sure of what's included in the 5 page letter yet, it sounds like it contains remarks about the current U.S. adminisration's record of undermining international institutions. Regardless of what is contained in the letter, it seems that this goes back to an earlier blog discussion about the role of citizens in foreign policy making. Ahmadinejad is trying to affect U.S. foreign policy by appealing directly to the American people. It will be interesting to see the coverage of this story, the response on the part of U.S. citizens, and if it makes a difference in our policy toward Iran. I personally hope that this will help encourage serious diplomatic negotations with Iran, but I don't think it will. What is really interesting is that Ahmadinejad is trying to take advantage of the democratic nature of our government.

Our dear friend Mahmoud certainly chose an interesting path to the hearts of his American audience. No sooner has he established that both Iranians and Americans love peace, hate injustice, and like puppies than does he launch into the real cause of trouble in the Middle East: Zionism.

It's US support for Zionism that causes so much resentment in the Muslim world. It's US toleration for the Zionists, allowing them to kill Muslim men, women and children, deny them a homeland, that makes the Middle East such a bloody place.

Then we have mentions of the US mistreatment of prisoners and cruel idea of justice, with specific mention of Abu-Ghraib and Guantanamo. Curious, coming from a country whose judicial system only recently decided to do away with the practice of stoning.

But then it's back to Zionism again. Won't we join the Iranians, Mahmoud asks, in protesting the treatment of Palestinians? Won't we join together against the Zionist cause?

It's comforting to see that the words "truth," "justice," and "peace" make multiple appearances throughout the document. But you don't see the word "democracy" or "Israel". One has to wonder, if Mahmoud believes his audience will forgive the omissions.
